Chapter Fourteen

Brianna stood next to the cash register with a cart full of bags of lawn treatment. As the woman next to her paid the bill, Brianna’s eyes returned to the clock on the wall. She needed to get going.

“Ready?” She said to the woman next to her.

She didn’t wait for an answer. Pushing the cart from the feed store, she looked around the parking lot trying to guess which vehicle belonged to the woman inside. A moment later, the woman came out still tucking her card away as she scrambled to catch up with Brianna.

As soon as the woman pointed at her vehicle, Brianna began briskly walking toward it, pushing the cart of lawn treatment in front of her. She off-loaded it as quickly as possible and nearly ran back to the store dragging the empty cart behind her. She was pulling her work vest off as she approached the computer in the back of the store to clock out.

“You still have a little time before school lets out,” Dan said.

“I can’t take any chances. He’ll think of some way to get at me. The best way to do that is through my son.” She began walking away.

“Have you thought of a restraining order?”

She slowed and turned around to look at him as she continued to increase the distance between them. “I’m not sure it would matter. He’s good at making sure there are never any witnesses. I can’t afford a lawyer right now anyway.”

“What if I give you an advance on your salary? It would be worth it, to have your peace of mind.” Dan gave her a wry smile. “I’m not sure all of our customers can race you out of the store on the way to their car.”

“I’m sorry.”

Dan held up his hand. “Go. Just think about it, okay? The offer stands.”

Holly descended the stairs at the farm house she and Tyler rented, her hair still damp from her shower. It felt good to be home after cooking all day at the Jammin’T. She loved her job, but she loved being with the animals at the farm too. Luna, the kitten she had adopted, was now a full-grown cat and lived in the house with them. Luna’s mom preferred to remain in the barn and still refused to allow anyone near her.

When she reached the bottom step, she heard voices in the front of the house. She knew one of the voices belonged to her brother. She didn’t recognize the other voice. She stepped out onto the front porch allowing the screen door to slap closed behind her. The young woman standing in front of Tyler looked tiny and lost. Holly recognized her from the diner.

“There she is.” Tyler waved to Holly to approach them. “This is Mandy. She’s the artist I was telling you about. Mandy, this is Holly, my sister.”

Holly flashed a friendly smile. The one she got in return was so fast she wondered if she’d imagined it.

“Tyler said you’d like to meet some animals?” Holly stopped when she reached the two of them.
